Kijkwijzer is a role model says European Commission

According to Reding, the research convincingly shows that self-regulation and co-regulation in the media sector, such as by means of Kijkwijzer, work better than traditional government regulation. The European Commission has stated that self-regulation or co-regulation (a combination of government and self-regulation) is better able to respond to the rapid advances in technology and growing consumer autonomy in our digital society. Traditional forms of government regulation lack the flexibility to respond adequately to the speed of technical, social and economic change and to the far-reaching decentralisation of information. Furthermore, it is difficult to monitor compliance using traditional approaches.     
 
The research into co-regulation in the European media sector was carried out for the Commission by the Hans-Bredow Institut from the University of Hamburg in cooperation with the Institute for European Media Law in Saarbrücken.
